Levels of Analysis

First article: Senate president questions Oregon- only bridge plan.
The article is focused first about the Oregon Senate President not willing to build a bridge over the Columbia River without the support of Washington State. It then progresses to only building half a bridge, and how there is no way possible to build a bridge to another state. It is focused on this topic because it affects both states, and the people who live there.
People should care about this because like I said above it affects everyone, not only the money, but all the construction and time and effort this project would cost.
The article didn’t end in a way that answered all the questions. It never stated if it happened, or what happened after this proposal.
They might choose to build the bridge they might not. If so, it wasn’t clearly answered at the end nor stated. The article just ended at a point where they might have to do it alone. It still left questions unanswered.

The big questions are answered in the middle to upper portion of the article stating the costs, and why Oregon is against building the bridge. All the facts and important information is at the very beginning due to that fact that they want to keep the reader interested in the story, and wants them to keep reading.
The quotes are in the beginning and at the end of the article.
The sentences are long; however, they are not complex due to the fact that it gives the most important information in the beginning of the article and the least important information at the end.
The names of people and the organization are in the beginning, the verbs and tenses are in the middle, and the time elements are at the end.
I would say they are straightforward in the beginning because they want people to read it; however, at the end it was unclear about what the next move was.
They never stated or gave clear examples of any words.
There are not many commas; however, they are two short pauses in the article. This means that the next line of words is very important.
They use a lot of attributions because they are stating what the Oregon president is saying and wants to do. In this article, they use people’s names a lot which is very important.
Second article: Alzheimer’s example
The article is focused on the fact that they have been trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s for decades. This is important to the people because it’s very relevant to people’s daily lives or knows someone who has had this horrible disease.  It progresses from there when it states that they have uncovered a trigger for the disease.
People should care about this because it affects a lot of people, and they should care about how to prevent it.
They did not answer a lot of questions at all. It is very unclear, and doesn’t give good information. It states that Copper could prevent it, but Copper is found in everything and we can’t stay away from it. So basically, this story is going around in circles not answering the questions that people want to know about.
Hopefully next, they will find a cure or new study that will actually help prevent it and let people know. It is not covered well, and is too short to answer anything.
The big questions are answered in the second paragraph when stating that the mineral copper could prevent toxins from leaving the brain. This is relevant because it is stating that from a new study they found new information that could prevent the disease.
Since there are no quotes in this article, a good idea would to find someone who has experienced this disease or a family member who has known someone with this disease, and have them say their thoughts, and if the new study helped their case.

The sentences are very short, because it is broadcast they shouldn’t be long, they should be to the point, and short.

News Editing Exercise

I rewrote sections of a news story and a broadcast script. My execution was—shall we say—poor. Many of the mistakes I made were similar to the writing problems I noticed in your introductions to your neighbors. Please help me fix the following stories by: (1) identifying portions (i.e. sentences, phrases, wording) of the text that need to be edited with a highlight and; (2) providing an edited version of the stories with your revisions in blue text.  Save your work on the Z drive in your file so we can review later.

Mechanical issue cancels Alaska cruise, 4 others
Celebrity Cruises canceled an Alaska cruise midway through the voyage because of the ship's mechanical problems, and also canceled four more cruises aboard the Millennium.
Celebrity Cruises canceled Alaska cruise due to mechanical problems.

JUNEAU, Alaska —
Causing alarm to many, Celebrity Cruises has canceled the remainder of a seven-night cruise and outdoor excursion trip to various portions of Alaska, plus four additional cruises, after mechanical issues forced a ship carrying more than 3,100 passengers and crew members to return to port in Ketchikan.
Celebrity Cruises has canceled the remainder of a seven- night cruise to Alaska after mechanical issues forced the 3,100 passengers and crew members to return to Ketchikan.
Passengers were told by the cruise line in a statement on Tuesday that passengers on the Millennium ship would receive refunds. Their cruise fares and chartered air travel home also will be covered. It also said it was offering future cruise certificates for 100 percent of the fare paid for this cruise.
Passengers on the Millennium ship would receive refunds. It also said it was offering future cruise certifies that the fare paid for this cruise.
The mechanical issues also forced the cancellation of cruises on the Millennium that were scheduled for Aug. 23, Aug. 30, Sept. 6 and Sept. 13, the company announced late Tuesday.
Cynthia Martinez, a spokeswoman for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., which owns Celebrity Cruises, said by email that about 2,200 guests and nearly 960 crew members were onboard the current cruise. She said that Royal Caribbean Cruises and Celebrity Cruises, or the mechanics that work for them "will do whatever is necessary to get our guests back home, at no additional cost to them."
Martinez said guests booked on the other canceled sailings will receive a full refund, as well as a certificate for a future cruise.
Don’t need to repeat.

One of the two propulsion motors for the Millennium is what led to the 965-foot ship being unable to sail. The cruise line decided to cancel the sailing "in an abundance of caution," though Martinez said it could still sail at a reduced speed with one motor.
The ship had to cancel the sailing due to only one working motor.
The ship had an issue with the same motor on a prior outing, she said.
Celebrity Cruises said the seven-night sailing began Friday, with the ship leaving Vancouver, B.C. Ketchikan, in southeast Alaska, was one of several ports of call scheduled before the cruise was to end in Seward.
Coast Guard spokesman Kip Wadlow said the latest problem with one of the two propulsion motors is what prompted the ship to return to Ketchikan after it had left the port on Sunday. but that they could have recognized the problem earlier and not had to return on Sunday. He said the Coast Guard on Monday ordered the vessel to stay put until the issue was fixed.
Wadlow said the agency was working with Celebrity Cruises, “to put the safety of the crew and the passengers first, ensure that they are protected and ensure that the vessel is capable of safely getting under way."
The cruise company said engineers, consultants from the motor's manufacturer and the cruise line's marine operations team had been working "around the clock" to resolve the issue.
The president and CEO of the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau, Patti Mackey, said some restaurants and bars in town got a boost Sunday night when the cruise ship returned. Cruise ships typically aren't in town that late, and "that was a pleasant up-shot for them, anyway," she said.
Some restaurants and bars in town got a boost Sunday night when the cruise ship returned said the president and CEO of the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau, Patty Mackey.
She said the tour company that manages transfers for the cruise line also was busy contacting local tour companies to ask about extra space they might have for the held-over passengers. Some passengers just walked around town and shopped, she said.
"It's not the ideal situation for those folks who really wanted to see all the stops on the itinerary, but we're trying to do our best to make them feel comfortable and welcome," Mackey said of the community.

Exercise:  Objectivity and bias

Think about the following news assignment. How will your reporting effort (i.e. gathering and presentation of the fact) strive for objectivity and lack of bias?

Washington State University has just announced that conservative spokesperson John Randdis will be holding a rally to support a proposed state initiative to re-criminalize all marijuana use. You find that a large contingent of protestors is on hand at the event to rally for medical marijuana use but in support of re-criminalizing recreational marijuana use. A very small group of vocal (e.g. they are yelling loudly at people passing by) supporters for recreational marijuana use also are on hand. John Randdis agrees to interview with you after the event. He tells you that the University fully supports his position and not that of these “deviants” who “want to toke up and destroy our society.” You need to cover the rally and provide background information on the issue.

Some questions to answer:
·         What perspectives need to be covered here?
The perspectives of the protestors are the most important factor that needs to be covered because they are leading the rally. However, I would also address the perspective of law enforcement, health care professionals and government officials because they are the parties involved in decision making.
·         Say you have five quotes you want to use in the story, how do they
break down among the people involved?
Among the people involved the story would benefit from having quotes from someone who is completely unbiased and just a bystander, someone who is in support of medical marijuana as well as someone who does not support medical marijuana. It would also help to have quotes from someone who supports recreational drug use and someone who doesn’t support recreational marijuana use.
·         Who do you focus on in your story? That is, at what point in the story do you introduce each of the various perspectives?
The focus should be on the protestors and their views, both those for recreational and medical use of marijuana. That way the focus is on the people involved and all opinions are being heard. I would introduce both sides in the same paragraph, so that they are represented equally from a reporter’s standpoint.
·         What types of document or report sources might you look for?
I would look for the benefits of medical marijuana, and what compels people to use it for health reasons. However, I would also look for information from those who use it recreationally and why they see the importance. In addition, I would also want to look for documents explaining how medical marijuana is pertinent to someone’s health via a healthcare provider, and I would also want to speak with a police officer to discuss the concern for recreational marijuana use.
